UST REMOVALS AND REMEDIATION

FORMER SERVICE STATION – CONNECTICUT

MES was retained to conduct an underground storage tank (UST) removal and soil remediation project from a former gasoline service station. Upon completion of the UST removal project, soil remediation activities were initiated to excavate, remove, and dispose of a total of 3,415-tons of petroleum and waste oil impacted soils from two separate spill numbers (petroleum and waste oil releases).

Field screening activities (collection of 378 PID readings) conducted on-site differentiated between the two releases and 3,078-tons of petroleum impacted soils and 337-tons of waste oil impacted soils were subsequently separated in different stockpiles for disposal.

  • Post-excavation soil sampling and analysis;
  • Indoor air screening, sampling, and risk evaluations of the abutting residential property;
  • Installation of 62 soil borings on-site/off-site following a grid pattern to further delineate the horizontal and vertical extent of subsurface impacts;
  • Connecticut DEP, local official, and abutting property negotiations for access, future planning, and response actions;
  • Installation of 10 sub-slab basement borings;
  • Soil and air monitoring and analysis;
  • GW/NAPL monitoring and analysis;
  • Connecticut DEP file reviews and meetings for reimbursement eligibility; and
  • State regulatory compliance and reporting.

Subsequent project-related activities included the following:
